Mosaic Dish by Lena (Student)

We have recently had a large number of mosaics being created in the studio. The children especially have shown a real appreciation (and surprising patience) for the ancient art form, creating some fantastically detailed  pieces on wooden boards and clay dishes.

Working with colourful glass tiles it is inevitable that, every now and then, they do actually bleed for their craft but this does not deter them one bit! It’s wonderful to see their fearless creativity and determination to get their pieces perfect.

For adults and kids alike mosaic is a wonderful art form to try and to develop further. It’s takes a bit of patience but if you found you had a true passion for it, the possibilities are endless. From hand-making your own tiles to covering a whole floor or wall in an elaborate design.

We often walk right over some of the oldest and most beautiful pieces of art without even realising it.

Saturday’s kids have done it again! They just make me SO PROUD! Little geniuses! I can’t get enough.

This past Saturday, we looked at Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani and his figure paintings. Modigliani was best known for his modern, simplified take on portraiture creating mask like faces and elongated bodies and features.

The kids chose members of their family to base their portraits on…paying careful attention to such details as hairstyles, jewelry and type of clothing. At the end of the day, they had created masterpieces. I have to admit, there were quite a few I wanted to take home myself.

European Ballet dancer in Bangkok? “No way” you might say. Oh yee of little faith…

Vivienne, an English Ballet dancer kindly volunteered, did the shoot and then dashed to catch a plane to Paris, much appreciated!

Vivienne was found by Stageworks owner, Michelle Chambers – The mother of one of our enthusiastic little students.

Attic is always open to helping fellow artists as best we can. And the studio is the perfect setting to take a few shots.

*No Ballerinas were hurt in the making of this blog.

Each student has chosen their preferred medium, including soft pastels, oil pastels and oil paint, meeting the challenges of how to paint a thousand leaves, or pastel a rock so that it looks rocky, or create the colour of water or capture the intensity of light…

Wonderful!

A little bird told me that she didn’t look quite so proper later that evening…or rather earlier the next morning.

Last Tuesday we managed, with brilliant results, to get the broom seller man into the studio for a Bangkok Life sitting.  Students took the opportunity to try to capture the chaos and colour of the broom “train” in a variety of styles. Some interested in the madness of feathers and grass and colourful handles. Some interested in the mechanics of the old converted motorbike, and others in Mr. Broom himself and his cool ear-flap hat.

With so much to look at, any point of view was worthwhile.

Hanging off this fantastic vehicle were feather dusters, grass brooms of all lengths and sizes, mops, toilet brushes, plants in plant pots, dust pans, rear view mirrors, a horn, a loudspeaker and a small clock.

I get the feeling this will not be the last time we’ll see the broom guy. We’ll definitely want him back in the future.
