A Rather Floral First Friday

At 7pm on Friday, 3rd September it was raining. A few moments earlier, it was pouring. Attic staff stood in the shelter of the studio thinking “Oh no, all this work and no body’s going to turn up”. Boy were we wrong…

It seemed as if people just kept showing up. One by one, two by two, in the taxi load. By 10pm the place was heaving, and they still didn’t stop coming!

Another Bloomin’ First Friday

FIRST FRIDAY INVITE LALA #10 NEW FINAL APPROVED

Guess what? It’s that time of the month again…First Friday is being whispered in the streets; people are at home, as we speak, picking their outfits; And the flower market is going to get a lot of business tonight.

Why you ask? Because this First Friday, we’re all about the blossom. The studio will be adorned in the magnificently vibrant oil paintings of Leilani Franklin-Apted.

While upstairs, Alan Scott-Moncrieff will be demonstrating his impasto painting technique.

Life on Sunday?

Yesterday, Attic held a special FREE life drawing class in the studio to celebrate the beginning of our new life Drawing season. The turn out was phenomenal, with the downstairs studio bursting at the seams. 12 people showed up to enjoy the teachings of Welsh artist Nigel Price, and his charcoal drawing techniques.

Participants varied in age and professions, including University students, magazine writers, a tennis coach and a professional cartoonist.

It was certainly a change from the usual Sunday energy.

Life Drawing IS BACK!

DSC09750

After a brief hiatus for the summer, Life Drawing is back in action! (Thank goodness for that. I’m out of practice myself.)

Kicking off our life drawing week on Wednesday was our brand new Figurative Workshop with Lisa Bergan. Students didn’t just draw a conventional figure using conventional methods, they expressed themselves with a variety of line and media and produced some amazing pieces. I was well impressed!

At some point during the day, one of our students mentioned that they had, and I quote:

“Never drawn one of THOSE before”……

Day of Rest…or not.

Wondering what to do on a Sunday besides lie around watching too much bad T.V. and eating too much greasy food?

Attic is open every Sunday for those interested in instruction and for those who just want to paint on their own. It’s a relaxing day of the week to pop over and enjoy some quiet creativity. Especially for those of you who work every other day of the week.

Where’s Elsie?

Where’s Elsie this week? Hazard a guess?

Exploring the nooks and crannies of the Ancient City? No. Galloping around in the Scottish highlands? No. The Pub? No (not right now anyway). Painting a mural to dazzle the masses? No.

Elsie has been at NIST (the New International School of Thailand) demonstrating her painting in the school atrium and talking to students about art.

It’s Official!

Art classes make smarter, more well rounded kids.

What do you get when you combine the words: “Ladder” & “Storm”? Good question – This is 7 year old, Jordan’s answer!

Ancient City Road Trip

Yesterday, Sunday 15th August, Elsie took a couple of people out to the Ancient City (Muang Boran) for an art-day-out and a chance to paint and draw some beautiful scenery.

Elizabeth (the newly retired head of art from the International School of the Regents) and Amy (Found Attic online) met Elsie at the studio at 8am Sunday morning, gathered the necessary materials and piled into her car to head off to the Ancient City, about an hours drive from Bangkok.

Driving around the park, Amy and Elizabeth’s mouths were hanging open from the view. They stopped to paint at a Sala with a gorgeous view of a lake, reflecting a collection of Chedis.

Life Drawing who?

Life drawing has always been a popular class at Attic Studios. So it’s a cause for celebration that we’re adding yet another day!

Thursdays (beginning 26th August) will hold our regular Life Drawing class where students will learn and perfect the basics of figure drawing using charcoal. Tuesdays will continue to be ‘Bangkok Life’ day, when we drag someone in off the street and have them sit for us, whether they be a motorbike taxi driver, the broom seller guy, the sewing lady or the fruit man – we’ll take them all!
