The hoards have scattered…

The last couple of months has seen hoards of school kids and teeny boppers take over the studio during their summer holidays. It’s been fun but as schools begin to open for the new term, the hoards are diminishing…it’s more like a scattering now.

Elsie’s off to the U.K. this Sunday after having spent the last week moving to a new and hobbit-like house. She’ll be gone for a month! I know – I don’t know how I’m going to survive either. But classes will go on as usual. So, if you haven’t been in for a while, get your butts in here and paint.

The foundation course for Impasto painting will commence on 21st September. If you’re interested, contact us asap and we’ll sign you up. Warning: this course is not for the faint of heart. I’ve done it and there were days I wanted to throw things. If you are open and committed to learning something new, then this is a great experience. One of the past students said about the foundation course:

“Every day was a revelation. The painting demonstrations were invaluable and exciting, and Alan’s ability to address each participant’s strengths and weaknesses helped develop our confidence and skills…This course is perfectly pitched for the serious beginner, it’s my best use of money in years”"

Homework: all students will be assigned homework projects that will demand 5 – 10 hours of their time per week. These assignments will include color/tonal studies, brush exercises, composition, perspective etc. Students can either do these at home or subscribe to a discounted membership for studio time at Attic Studios to complete their assignments. These homework assignments will prepare students for the Intermediate course in April. After completion of all three Seminars (Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced) each student should have a solid core of techniques and an understanding on how to proceed with their desired approach. Painting is similar to learning to write: we must first learn the alphabet, form the letters, then join them to make sentences…all this so we can forget this process as we express our feelings and creative concepts. Without a solid understanding of the tools and their potential, it is not possible to find direction or effectively express ourselves in paint. You will learn the secrets of the impasto technique applied by such impressionists at Sorolla, Seargent and Monet during the height of the Impressionist movement. This style will assist you to see in a new way, and give you a foundation that may be used in a variety of painting styles as you evolve as an artist and discover your own personal approach to your work. This Seminar promises to be a dynamic educational forum that will inspire and equip you to take your art to a higher level of professionalism.
